App Review: Spell Number

For those of you who want to include smiley faces in your texts, this is the app for you. My hubby discovered it when he wanted to send me a heart in a text (he's so sweet!) and he discovered it. While, you have to follow a few steps to get it to work, once it's set up it is VERY FUN. The app includes all kinds of pics to use (too many to name) and can be used in any program (it works for Facebook for iPhone too, although the pic I used didn't show up on Facebook on the regular internet...) Definitely worth a try, especially since its FREE!

App Review: Skee-Ball

I used to play skee-ball a long time ago. Who didn't play skee-ball growing up. Arcades aren't as commonplace anymore and with that neither is the skee-ball. Enter this app (iTunes link). This game brings back those days. The game play is pretty well laid out and very smooth. It's very addicting. There is also a chance to earn some cool stuff with the tickets you win by scoring high. Just like in those arcades.

Google Nexus Hands On

Looks like Engadget has a hands on with the Nexus One.

AT&T still misses the boat

This latest commercial still misses the boat. Alright, I get great 3G here in my area of Hampton Roads, VA. But if you look at the map (Verizon's ad campaign is genius), there is a HUGE gap in coverage when it comes to 3G. I recently spent some time in NC and the coverage for 3G is horrible down there. Sure the major cities have it, but I was on EDGE for 99.9% of the time. AT&T needs to stop spending so much money hiring Luke Wilson for the commercials and spend it upgrading their network.

LTE

To add to the rumor mill, I really think the next iPhone will be LTE (Long Term Evolution). I've heard lots of things that would prove this point. I think that Apple wants to get off AT&T and the move to Verizon would coincide with their roll out of LTE and the move from EVDO. Verizon has been testing LTE in 2009 and have said that they would introduce it in 2010. It's looking like AT&T will be going with LTE as well while Sprint on the other hand is going with WiMAX. This could very well mean that if Apple rolls out it's next iPhone in July AND it's LTE, it could run on both AT&T and Verizon.

Use 1st Gen iPhone as iPod

So my father recently acquired a 1st Gen iPhone to use as an iPod and we couldn't get it to work. It had the latest and greatest firmware installed. The SIM card in it wasn't active and every time I plugged it in iTunes would try to activate it. I even went to the AT&T store to try and score an active SIM card, but it still wouldn't work. Finally, I decided to run blackra1n on it. After this, it worked like a champ.

Totally Safe

During this pleasantly surprising long New Year's Eve weekend, I spent many hours enjoying Netflix instant view to escape the cold . One British series than enraptured my attention for the majority of the weekend was Skins. It's about 17 year old high school students trying to make it through life while overcoming challenges. Dead beat parents, drug abuse, death, and of course everyone's favorite sex all come together rather well. Unlike typical American television series, Skins keeps throwing surprises at every turn but keeping the situations grounded in real life. There are no cheap tricks to keep the audience interested. Just great storytelling. The acting is superb as well it should with the wide range of incredible accents that makes Great Britain famous. I'm currently making my way through the second season and it doesn't get boring or drag. If you're a British loving American and would love to get a look at what the other side of the Pond is like, this is the great chance to explore a foreign place similar but different to our own United States of America.

My Kindle so far

I bought a Kindle 2 not too long ago. I am in the Navy and about to go to sea for three months. I have done cruises before and being the book worm I am, hated carrying so many books with so little space provided by Uncle Sam. Enter the Kindle. I wanted the Nook, but the Kindle offered the ability to buy books while overseas and it was available now (unlike the Nook still not being out yet). So far I have to say I am impressed. I had already purchased books using the Kindle iPhone app, so I had a few already ready to go. Buying the books have proven to be really simple and I like the interface. The books are downloaded pretty fast over the AT&T network even over Edge, while in NC where there was no 3G coverage. The E-ink is pretty easy on the eyes and after buying an M-Edge cover to protect it, I really think this has been a worthwhile purchase. I will provide a more detailed review once I am back on solid ground with details on how it holds up at sea.
